I will preface my review by saying this documentary is not for everyone. Unless you have a working knowledge of dance (preferably modern dance) or are a great lover of dance/amazing aesthetics you would probably not like this film or at least understand it. In a way this documentary isn’t really about Pina Bausch. Its more like a touching love letter or send-off to the choreographer who died in 2009 just two days before filming began. The documentary is mostly snippets of her most famous works, and members of her company saying a very little something about her or their experience with her, but mostly dancing a tribute to her. Visually, this documentary is stunning. Each frame is a work of art. I didn’t see it in 3D, but it doesn’t need it. The cinematography alone is enough. The dancing is emotional, surprisingly funny, dark, painful, and just so beautiful. It is 103 minutes of hard-core modern dance, so if you’re not a fan or if you don’t know what that means, you should probably stick to Dirty Dancing. ****
